Mr. Bonar moved to Dover in the mid-1960's, while in the United States Air force, after growing up in Sacramento, California and being part of an Air Force military family. His travels included attending school in France and Turkey and visiting much of the European continent.
He has been a Life Member of the Dover Fire Department since the early 1970's and was a police officer for the City of Dover, serving as one of their first motorcycle patrol officers.

Mr. Bonar worked for many years as a journalist, in radio, television and newspapers and has been an avid supporter of Dover and Kent County for decades.

He was appointed by Governor Ruth Ann Minner to the Delaware State Board of Pharmacy and was reappointed by Governor Jack Markell in 2010. Mr. Bonar also serves as a member of the Kent County Regional Planning Commission and is a past representative to the Downtown Dover Partnership Board of Directors. Prior to his election, Mr. Bonar served as Vice President of the Dover July 4th Committee and he is an advisor to the Delaware Volunteer Firefighter's Association.
