Biographical Information

Councilman David Bonar, born in Glendale, West Virginia and raised in Sacramento, California and abroad, was transferred to Dover in the mid-1960s while serving in the United States Air Force.  Growing up in an Air Force family, Mr. Bonar had the opportunity to attend school in France and Turkey and to visit much of the European Continent.

 

Mr. Bonar worked for many years as a journalist in radio, television, and newspapers; was a City of Dover police officer, serving as one of their first motorcycle patrol officers; and has been a Life Member of the Robbins Hose Company since the early 1970s.

 

Mr. Bonar was appointed by Governor Ruth Ann Minner to the Delaware State Board of Pharmacy and was reappointed to this office by Governor Jack Markell in 2010.  He retired as Ombudsman and Government Services Administrator to the Delaware Public Service Commission in 2012.  Mr. Bonar currently serves as the Public Advocate for the State of Delaware, having been appointed by Governor Markell and confirmed by the Delaware State Senate in June 2013.

 

Councilman Bonar was sworn into office as the Third District Representative in 2010 and has served as Council President since May 2013.  He previously served on City Council from 1982-1983 as the Second District Representative.  Mr. Bonar has also served as Vice President of the Dover Fourth of July Celebration Committee; a member of the Kent County Regional Planning Commission; and an advisor to the Delaware Volunteer Firefighter’s Association.

 

Mr. Bonar has worked in the field of public service his entire adult life and has been an avid supporter of Dover and Kent County for decades.

 

Mr. Bonar and his wife, Patty, have five grown children and three grandchildren.  Mr. Bonar’s hobbies include camping with his wife and family and spending time fishing and hunting with friends when he has the opportunity.
