What is the Human Relations Commission?
An advisory body created by the Mayor and City Council to foster the philosophy of inclusion, inter-group cooperation and fair treatment.
What is the goal of the Human Relations Commission?
To promote and develop an environment of fairness and respect among the citizens of Dover, and to involve all segments of the community in understanding and appreciating the benefits of positive inter-group relations.
How is the goal accomplished?
By developing ways to measure and monitor community relations, particularly those that are sources of inter-group conflict. The Commission is authorized to inquire into incidents of inter-group conflicts, disputes and alleged discrimination within the city, and to make recommendations to the Mayor and City Council for action to alleviate such conflicts. It may offer programs to help residents and neighborhoods of the City of Dover prevent and resolve issues of human relations. As a proactive step in building positive relations, the Commission has formed committees to organize public forums, study circles, intercultural events, etc. Individuals and groups interested in helping the Commission in this onerous effort are invited to contact the Commission.
How do I contact the Dover Human Relations Commission?
Open public meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers, City Hall, 15 E. Loockerman Street, 414 Federal Street, Dover. The Commission begins each regular meeting by inviting anyone present to address the Commission. Comments must be limited to three minutes. Any individual or organization may request a formal hearing before the Commission by completing an Intake Form which is available from the Mayor's Office.
