Credit Card Telephone Scam

On Tuesday July 8, 2008 the City of Dover received information that two area businesses had received telephone calls from unknown individuals who represented themselves as a City of Dover employee. The individuals advise the business that their utility account is delinquent and advise them that they were notified on a specific date of their delinquent service and their service will be disconnected if payment is not made immediately. The individual then advises that they will accept a credit card for payment and request a credit card number. One of the callers was described as a male with a foreign voice; the other caller was a female voice.

City of Dover would like to advise citizens that this is not the policy of the City and that citizens are urged not to give credit card information to anyone representing themselves in this fashion. If anyone has received this type of telephone call or has disclosed their information to these individuals please contact the Dover Police Department at 302-736-7111.
