Job Description:

The City of Dover Central Services Department is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Mechanic I in the Fleet Maintenance Division. The essential function of the position within the organization is to repair and maintain City vehicles and equipment.

Job Responsibilities

This position will perform diagnostics and make major repairs to City vehicles and equipment, including engine repair or replacement, transmission repair or replacement, and electrical or hydraulic systems repair. The position will also perform scheduled maintenance on vehicles such as changing oil and filters, spark plugs, or brake pads, or rotating tires. Examples of duties include responding to calls for assistance on disabled vehicles; performing layout, fabrication, and welding; test driving vehicles to locate problem areas or ensure proper functioning of vehicles; filling out work orders for jobs completed, including work performed, parts used, and cost; in addition, participating in cleaning and maintenance of work area and shop equipment.

Required Qualifications

Successful candidates must possess the ability to read technical instructions, charts, and procedure manuals.  The Mechanic I must also possess basic vehicle maintenance mechanic tool set.

A high school diploma or GED are required in addition to the equivalent of one (1) year of college or specialized vocational training in automotive repair or a closely related field.  This position also requires a valid Commercial Driver’s License or the ability to obtain CDL permit within three (3) months and CDL license within six (6) months of employment.

A criminal background check, driving record investigation and pre-employment drug/alcohol screening will be required. Candidates may be given a job-related test during the interview.
