New Employment Questions

A City of Dover employment application form is required for all open positions. Resumes will not be accepted in lieu of a completed City Employment Application but may be submitted with the application. Applications will not be accepted after 5:00 p.m. on the closing date listed. The City does not accept applications and resumes for positions that are not currently open. You may apply for an open position several ways. To obtain City Employment Application form, you may download the application from our website or visit the Human Resources Department and pick up an application. Once you have completed the Employment Application, you may either mail it to: City of Dover, Attn: Human Resources Dept., P.O. Box 475, Dover, DE 19903, fax it to (302) 736-7093 or submit the application in person between 8:30 am - 5:00 pm. The Human Resources Department is located in City Hall.

The City of Dover lists all open positions on the City of Dover web site. Job announcements for open positions are also available in the Human Resources Department at City Hall located at 15 E Loockerman Street. We also post announcement on the Human Resources Facebook page. Each job for which we are currently recruiting has a Job Vacancy Announcement. The Vacancy Announcement is an excellent source of information that lists the salary, duties of the job, the minimum requirements of the position, special requirements, and the day by which applications must be submitted.

It normally takes 3 - 4 weeks for the department to review the applications and set up interviews.

The City of Dover offers vision insurance, a choice of health care and dental plans, flexible spending accounts, short and long-term disability insurance, life insurance and a choice of 401a/457 deferred compensation plans. New employees go through a comprehensive benefit orientation at the beginning of their employment. During the orientation, employees are informed in great detail about their new benefits.

Yes. Although the majority of positions are filled on a full-time basis, the City of Dover does offer a limited number of part-time positions. Applicants interested in part-time employment should carefully review the job announcements for part-time opportunities.

Yes. Regardless a City of Dover Application must be filled out.  You may include a resume with it if you so choose.

The Human Resources Department is located in City Hall. City Hall is located on Loockerman Street, between the Dover Public Library and PNC Bank. Once locating City Hall, please enter through the front glass doors and come directly down the hallway. We are located across from the safe.

Yes, you must submit a separate application for each position because the applications will go to different departments.

The City of Dover does conduct pre-employment drug testing and criminal background checks on all applicants that are extended contingent job offers. All job offers are contingent upon successfully passing the pre-employment drug screening and background check process.

Yes, however a separate application must be completed for each position.

Yes, for employees who hold positions that require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Individuals offered a position by the City of Dover also have to go through drug screening prior to the start of their employment.

New employees serve a probationary period of 6 months.
