SPECIAL MEETING

August 16th, 1935

A meeting of the Building Commission of the City of Dover consisting of Messrs. Grover C. Frear, C. F. Millman and L. D. Shank was held in the Council Chamber to hear objections, if any, to the building of a steam laundry on South Governors Avenue on the north side of Mrs. Abbott’s property.

Mr. H. E. Lynch, Jr., appeared before the Commission in behalf of the citizens in that community to offer objections to this building. The petition which he presented to the Commission was signed by 16 citizens of the City. Their objections consisted of three main reasons: first, that a business of this kind would increase the property owners’ fire insurance rate; second, a portion of the operation of this plant is steam which necessitates the burning of soft coal which the citizens claim would be a nuisance on account of smoke; and third, a business of this kind would perhaps block the alley next to Mrs. Abbott’s property when loading and unloading trucks.

Mr. J. F. Bowdle was present and explained to the Commission that the last objection was absolutely ungrounded as there would be no loading or unloading in the alley as all trucks would be loaded and unloaded at the rear of the building on his own property.

These objections were recorded and are to be referred to the City Council at a special meeting held in the near future.

The Commission adjourned at 2:45 P.M.

                                                                        Signed:

City Clerk
