REGULAR MEETING

September 9, 1957

The regular meeting of City Council was held Monday, September 9, 1957, at 7:30 P.M. with Mayor Haman presiding. Councilmen present were Messrs Carroll, Hayes, Holpp, Mundy, Tischer and Turner.

MINUTES

Minutes of the meeting of August 26 were accepted as read.

REPORTS

Report of the Alderman Dempsey was accepted as read. Checks in the amounts of $3135.85, $835.00 and $146.00 were remitted to the City. Report of the Acting Alderman Shockley was accepted as read. Checks in the amounts of $11.50 and $4.00 were remitted to the City.

Report of the Chief of Police was accepted as read.

  

Budget report of July was accepted as read.

Cash receipts report to August 31 was accepted as read.

LAWS DEVELOPMENT

William Laws asked Council to make water and sewer available to land owned by him north of the City line at Weston Drive where he proposes to begin a housing development. The City Manager will check the elevation of the plot to determine whether it is possible to provide it with sewer, and report at the next Council meeting.

PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE

A petition from residents of Rodney Road and Pennsylvania Avenue extended requested Council to open Pennsylvania Avenue from Hazel Road to Rodney Road. A group of residents of Hazel Road and Pennsylvania Avenue appeared before Council to protest such action. Those desiring the opening wanted more direct access to the school for children. Those opposing disliked the additional traffic that would be created by a thru street. Council is awaiting a report on the cost of right of way.

REPORT

Report of the City Manger was accepted as read.

BOILER

City Manager Ward reported on a change to the new boiler which should soon be made by the manufacturer, Union Iron Works.

LINCOLN HEIGHTS

Mr. Ward reported that an agreement had been reached with Mr. Paskins thru which he would dedicate a 50' right of way south from Forest Street as an entrance to the proposed Lincoln Heights development. Mrs. Vera Davis discussed the development with Council and received Council’s affirmation that utilities would be provided.

STREET AND DRAINAGE PROJECT

City Engineer Bewick outlined to Council plans for a project which includes storm drainage from Governors Avenue and Mary Street to St. Jones River and the improvement of American Avenue, Smith Street and Maryland Avenue. On motion of Mr. Tischer, seconded by Mr. Hayes, Council approved the proposed removal and replacement of some curbs on American Avenue and the reconstruction of that street as shown on the project was approved for bid invitation. Tabulation of bids received will be presented to Council at its meeting of September 23.

GELOF MOTOR COURT

Harry Gelof requested that sewer and water be made available to a motor court which he proposes to erect at the northeast corner of Roosevelt Avenue and the dual highway. It is unlikely that the area can be provided with sewer except at considerable cost and Council will approve no extensions except in accordance with City specifications.
