SPECIAL MEETING

February 26, 1951

The special meeting of City Council was held Monday, February 26, 1951, at 7:30 P.M. with Mayor Storey presiding. Members present were Councilmen Book, Carroll, Culver, Holpp, Petty, Smith and Wilson.

FLUORIDATION OF CITY WATER

Messrs Peter DeMarie and James Gentry, representatives of the Dover Junior Chamber of Commerce asked City Council whether the City would operate and pay the cost of fluoridation of City water for a period of ten years if the Junior Chamber of Commerce would purchase the necessary equipment. Council accepted the proposal with the provision that the City would return the equipment to the Junior Chamber of Commerce if the City decided to discontinue fluoridation of water before the end of ten years.

BULK STORAGE PLANTS

Representatives of The Atlantic Refining Company, City Service Oil company, Harmon Oil Company, Pure Oil Company, The Texas company and Southern states Petroleum Cooperative appeared before council in response to a notice send them of fire hazards to be eliminated. All companies promised to erect dikes around bulk storage tanks, and to repair existing dikes, in accordance with ordinances of the City of Dover. Other fire hazards will be eliminated. The Fire Marshall will send a letter to each company listing deficiencies to be corrected. Council granted the companies ninety days in which to make corrections. Council will give further consideration to any request for extension of time.

ERDLE - LEAVE OF ABSENCE

City Manager Agner informed Council that Mr. Erdle has received orders to report for military duty March 16. Council authorized payment of Mr. Erdle’s salary until April 1 and granted him leave of absence while the military service.

OFFICE EMPLOYEES

Council authorized the City Manager to make such salary and working arrangements as are necessary to secure clerical workers in the City Office.

PARKING ON THE GREEN

Council referred to the Chief of Police recommendations for limiting on some sections of The Green to fifteen minutes.

GARTON FENCE

Council directed that a letter be sent to Mr. Irving Garton, Fairview Avenue and Walker Road, ordering him to remove a fence which now obstructs a City alley.

PARKING METERS

Council directed the City Solicitor to prepare an ordinance prohibiting parking on Governors Avenue north and couth of Loockerman Street for a distance which would eliminate a parking meter zone on each corner.

The matter of relocating the parking meters was referred to the Chief of Police.

Council adjourned at 9 P.M.
