SPECIAL MEETING

                                                                                                                        March 30, 1948

A special meeting of City Council was convened at 4:30 P.M. on March 30, 1948, with Vice Mayor Carson presiding. Members present were Mrs. Frear and Messrs. Carroll, Culver, Wilson and Mikell.

A petition was presented from William B. Behen and Sarah M. Behen objecting to the proposed erection of a synagogue on property adjoining his residence. Messrs. Barros, Simon and Feller appeared before Council to describe the proposed structure. Mr. Feller stated that the building they propose to erect will be one story, 35’ x 70’, facing Governors Avenue and paralleling Clara Street on the northwest corner of that intersection, with brick veneered concrete block walls, concrete ceiling, concrete asphalt tiled flooring, steel girdered and beamed, with a sanctuary, several smaller rooms and lavatories, at a total estimated cost of $25,000.00.

Upon motion of Mr. Carroll, seconded by Mrs. Frear, Council approved the issuance of a building permit for the erection of a synagogue at Governors Avenue and Clara Street, providing the detailed plans, when submitted with the application for a building permit, meet the requirements of the building code and generally follow the description given by Mr. Feller.

A petition was presented from William B. Behen and Sarah M. Behen objecting to the proposed erection of certain houses by Mr. George Hill on property adjoining the rear of his residence. Council adjourned to view a model house and the site in question, a lot with 180’ frontage on New Street, at the northeast corner of New and Clara Streets. Council reconvened to consider the petition and the application for a building permit. Mr. Hill modified his application to include the erection of three units in place of four. Council approved issuing a building permit for the erection of three houses on the site.

Council adjourned at 5:45 P.M.
