REGULAR MEETING

                                                                                                                        October 14, 1946

The regular meeting of City Council was held on Monday evening, October 14, with Mayor Woodford presiding. The following members were present: Messrs. Carson, Mikell, Hinkle, Vane, Burton and Keith.

Minutes

Without objection it was voted to dispense with the reading of the minutes of HTE alst regular and special meetings.

City Manager’s Report

Upon motion of Mr. Keith, seconded by Mr. Burton, the report of the City Manager was accepted as read.

Chief of Police Report

Without objection, the report of the Chief of Police was accepted a read.

Alderman’s Report

Upon motion of Mr. Keith, seconded by Mr. Hinkle, the report of the alderman was accepted as read. A check in the amount of $782.90 accompanied the report.

Soot-Diamond State Dairy

Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Sipple appeared before Council complaining about the soot coming from the Diamond State Dairies which is due to the fact that the smoke stack has collapsed. They have a new stack but it seem that they cannot get anyone to erect it. After some discussion the matter was left up to the City Manager to act within thirty days or leave it up to him ifit cannot be done in that length of time.

Melvin Property

Mr. and Mrs. Melvin appeared before Council stating that they had purchased a lot in Lakewood Place, the deed for which restricted them from putting up a place for less than $3000.00. Some complaints have been received from residents adjacent to this lot saying that at present prices a home for $3000.00 would not conform with the surrounding buildings. After some discussion it was left up to the Building Committee to act as they saw fit.

Bruner Lot

Mr. Bruner appeared before Council asking what had been done with respect to the City purchasing his lot on North Bradford Street. he was told that he would be given a definite answer within a few days.

American Legion Parade

The American Legion is sponsoring a parade or Mardi Gras on Halloween and request that the City help them out financially. These affairs had been held prior to the war and at that them they did get help from the City. Upon motion of Mr. Keith, seconded by Mr. Hinkle, the City Manager was instructed to donate $100.00.

Salary Increases

A request from the employees of the Power Plant was presented to Council. Mr. Wilcox had obtained some salaries for similar work from our neighbor cities which are as follows: Foremen $45.00, Workers $35.00 – Milford, $39.00 Engineers, $35.00 Firemen; Salisbury, $1.30 per hour Turbine Operators, $1.07 per hour Firemen; Lewes, Foreman $55.00 per week, Turbine Operators $47.50 per week. After some discussion, it was decided to defer action until October 17 at which timea special meeting would be called.

Council adjourned at 8:45 P.M.
