SPECIAL MEETING

October 23, 1945

A special meeting of City Council was held on Tuesday evening, October 23, at 7:30 P.M. with Vice-Mayor LeFevre presiding. Members present were Messrs. LeFevre, Hartnett, Carson, Keith, Vane and Woodford.

CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS

City Manager Wilcox reported that several merchants had spoken to him about lighting and trimming the business section for the Christmas holidays. After some discussion, upon motion of Mr. Carson, seconded by Mr. Hartnett, the City Manager was instructed to proceed with the street lighting at a cost not to exceed $350.00. He was also instructed to get prices on evergreens for trimming and to report to Council at the next meeting. It was also decided not to erect the sign on the Wilson Building.

BASEBALL PARK

Mr. Wilcox reported that the work in connection with seeding the baseball diamond was being started at once, but that he did not think it advisable to start any of the repairs until spring. Upon motion of Mr. Carson, seconded by Mr. Vane, the City Manager was instructed to place orders for some of the materials needed in view of the fact that these materials were scarce and that it would take several months to get them after the orders were placed, but in no event to spend any money until the transfer of property had been made.

STREET LIGHTING TRANSFORMERS

Mr. Wilcox reported that the street lighting transformers at the power plant were in bad condition and two of them should be replaced. He stated that they had been patched until they were almost beyond patching. He also stated that Westinghouse Company has a transformer in stock which could be purchased at a cost of approximately $750.00. Upon motion of Mr. Carson, seconded by Mr. Vane, the City Manager was instructed to by the transformer.

RECREATIONAL DIRECTOR

The City Manager reported that he had received six applications for the position of recreational Director, but id not think that any of them would be suitable since they only had had coaching experience.

LIGHTS ON WESLEY COLLEGE CAMPUS

Mr. Wilcox reported that the three lights he was instructed to install on the Wesley College Campus were insufficient to give all the light required. He therefore ha ordered four and wished Council’s approval. This approval was granted.

BUILDING PERMITS

The City Manager presented a request from Beacon Laboratories to erect a building 100 x 325 feet on the lot in the rear of their present building on Railroad Avenue & North Street.

He also presented a request from Ralph Williams to erect an abbatoir on a lot facing Mary Street from West to Kirkwood Streets. After some discussion, upon motion of Mr. Keith and seconded by Mr. Vane, the City Manager was instructed to issue these permits.
